Shahla is forced to reveal more of her past after their home is visited by two Israelis. Phillip, a Christian, and Shahla, an observant Jew, begin dating, despite their religious differences, and they eventually get married. Their paths cross again in the ER after she’s attacked by an armed inmate, whom she kills in self-defense. Shahla’s reticence convinces Philip that her job at the prison is a cover. The intriguing first volume of Khubiar’s espionage trilogy opens with Phillip Sherrod, a doctor working in a rural Appalachian county, treating attractive 37-year-old Shahla Markow for a shoulder injury she may have incurred while teaching self-defense to the staff of the federal prison where she works.
